Enjoy a true Swedish winter experience during a week in the beautiful Swedish region of Dalarna. Experience special winter activities in Sweden, such as a dog sledding tour and a snowmobile ride through a stunning snow-covered landscape. Thanks to your stay in a small-scale ski resort in Dalarna, you can also ski through the Swedish mountains. And with a little luck, you may even spot the magical Northern Lights during clear winter evenings.

Accommodation | Modern apartment

The trip takes place in Idre, a family-friendly ski resort located in Dalarna, surrounded by beautiful mountains and vast nature. Here you will stay in a recently built, modern apartment. The apartment has a well-equipped kitchen, two bedrooms, a cosy living room and a private sauna, ideal for relaxing after a day in the snow. Thanks to its convenient location close to the ski slopes, you can be on the slopes within a short time. For a relaxing stay, the beds will be made upon arrival and an extensive hotel breakfast is included every morning.

Activities | Dog sledding

A trip only becomes truly special with unique activities. And one of those is, of course, a dog sledding tour. Accompanied by a guide, adults and older children can drive their own dog sled, while smaller children can sit comfortably on the sled. In one hour, you will travel through the deeply snow-covered forests and mountains. Afterwards, there is of course plenty of time to cuddle with the dogs.

ADD ON: Extended tour

During this more extensive tour of 1,5 hour, you will also drive your own sled. After the tour, you can help feed the dogs. The tour ends with a dinner prepared over a campfire, featuring local and traditional products such as reindeer meat.

Activities | Snowmobile safari

Time for some action! Accompanied by a guide, you will go on a snowmobile tour through the forests with views of the mountains. Don't forget to look around, as you may spot a moose or reindeer here! Halfway through the tour, a cosy campfire is made to warm up.

ADD ON: Snowmobile safari with ice fishin

During this tour, you will ride the snowmobiles for about half an hour to a location where you can go ice fishing. Here you can try ice fishing yourself while enjoying a cup of coffee. You will be fishing for the Swedish ‘röding’. Each person is allowed to keep one fish.

Optional activity | Skiing

Ready to test the Swedish slopes? The apartment is located close to the slopes of Idre Fjäll and the ski equipment rental. It is also possible to take ski lessons. Looking for some variety? You can also drive (or take the bus) to another nearby ski resort.

Optional activity | Snowshoe walk with reindeers

If you ask us, this is one of the most special experiences in the region. This activity is located approximately 45 minutes away by car. Together with a local Sámi guide, you will go on a snowshoe walk through a snow-covered primeval forest. You will walk through the deep snow on snowshoes while the reindeer roam freely around you. During the traditional Sámi fika, you will learn more about Sámi culture and life with and alongside the reindeer.

General informatiON

Travelling period

Our recommended travel period for this holiday runs from the end of December until March. A tip is to book this trip during February and March as the days are already getting longer during this period.

Travel party

This trip is recommended for families, but can also be booked by individual travellers or couples.

After submitting a request, we will review the travel party and dates you provided. Based on this, you will receive a personalised travel proposal with the corresponding costs.

Transport

For this trip, we recommend booking a return flight to and from Scandinavian Mountain Airport. From there, we will arrange a rental car to drive to the accommodation in just under two hours. It is also possible to arrange a transfer to the accommodation. However, for flexibility during your stay, we recommend renting a car.

It is of course also possible to travel by car or to fly to another airport.

CAN ACTIVITIES BE CANCELLED DUE TO THE WEATHER?

Please keep in mind that the weather in Dalarna can change quickly. In the event of extreme cold, strong winds, insufficient snow or other unfavorable conditions, an activity may be adjusted, rescheduled or cancelled. The local provider will determine whether an activity can safely go ahead.

If a booked activity is cancelled by the organizer, Travel.se will make every effort, as quickly as possible and at no additional cost, to reschedule the activity for another time or, if this is not possible, offer a suitable alternative.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM THE WEATHER?

During the winter months, you can expect a true winter climate in Dalarna. There is usually snow, and temperatures are almost always below freezing.

In Idre Fjäll, average temperatures in December, January and February are roughly between -10 °C and -5 °C, depending on the month. January and February are often particularly cold. During colder periods, temperatures can drop significantly further, with -20 °C or lower possible. Due to its altitude, Idre Fjäll also generally has reliable snow conditions during the winter. Actual temperatures can vary considerably from day to day and can also be influenced by wind and the location within the mountain area.

For various winter activities, such as snowmobile tours and dog sledding, warm thermal clothing, a winter overall and suitable footwear are often provided. We will inform you in advance about what is provided for the booked activities and what you need to bring yourself.
