Why gravel biking works so well in Sweden

Sweden has an extensive network of grusvägar (gravel roads). Originally built for forestry and small villages, they are now perfect for cyclists. Many of these roads are wide, well maintained and almost traffic-free.

What makes Sweden stand out from other gravel destinations:

  • Very little traffic, even in tourist areas
  • Huge variety: forests, lakes, open landscapes and coastline
  • Good infrastructure and clear signposting
  • Nature everywhere, yet always a village or café nearby
  • And perhaps most importantly: you truly ride through the landscape here, not just past it.

The most beautiful regions for gravel biking in Sweden

Småland | classic Swedish gravel

Småland may well be Sweden’s most iconic gravel region. Gravel roads wind endlessly through forests, past red wooden houses and quiet lakes. The routes are varied but not extreme, making Småland perfect for both beginners and experienced gravel riders.

Why Småland?

  • Many short and medium-length gravel routes (30–90 km)
  • Easy to combine with a road trip
  • Plenty of places for a fika stop along the way
  • Around places like Vimmerby, Eksjö and Mariannelund you’ll find routes that are sporty, but also perfect for stopping and taking a swim.

Dalsland & Västra Götaland | wild and quiet

Just north of Gothenburg lies Dalsland: a sparsely populated region with forests, hills and water. Gravel biking here quickly feels more adventurous. The roads can be rougher, distances longer and the sense of peace almost complete.

This area is perfect if you want to:

  • Start a gravel trip from Gothenburg
  • Ride long day routes (60–120 km)
  • Prioritise nature over elevation PRs
  • A big advantage is that many routes are easy to combine with train or car travel, keeping your trip flexible.

Swedish Safari 300 | for those who want more

For experienced gravel riders, the Swedish Safari 300 is a well-known name. This route of around 300 kilometres runs through forests and nature reserves north of Stockholm and is popular among bikepackers.

What makes this route special:

  • Almost entirely on gravel
  • Several days of riding through remote nature
  • A good balance between challenge and accessibility

Ideal for those who want to truly experience Sweden by bike and are not afraid of a challenge.

When is the best time to go gravel biking in Sweden?

The gravel season generally runs from May to September.

  • May & June: fresh temperatures, long days, lush greenery
  • July & August: warmest months, perfect for swimming along the way
  • September: quieter, autumn colours, cooler but beautiful

In the north and in forested areas the weather can change quickly, so a good rain jacket is always recommended, even in summer.

Practical tips for gravel biking in Sweden

Route planning

Apps like Komoot, Ride with GPS and Strava work very well in Sweden. Many gravel roads are accurately mapped and local heatmaps quickly show popular routes.

The right setup

Tyres of 35 - 45 mm are ideal for Swedish gravel. Tubeless is useful, but not essential. Always carry enough food and water, as distances between villages can be quite large.

Accommodation

Sweden is very bike-friendly. Many accommodations are used to active travellers and offer secure bike storage as well as drying facilities for clothing.

Tips for local routes

Thanks to allemansrätten, you are also allowed to take breaks in nature, as long as you respect the environment and private property.

Combining gravel biking with travelling through Sweden

What makes gravel biking in Sweden especially attractive is how easy it is to combine with a round trip. You can:

  • Alternate cycling days with car travel
  • Cover multiple regions in one holiday
  • Combine nature with cities like Gothenburg or Stockholm

This way, gravel biking becomes part of a complete Swedish travel experience, not just a standalone cycling trip.
