Stepping back in time: Visby and its medieval charm

Gotland’s capital, Visby, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe. Wandering through its cobbled streets feels like stepping back in time. The city’s medieval wall, dating back to the 13th century, surrounds charming houses, ancient ruins, and cozy cafés.

Our tip for Visby? Enjoy great organic wines, tasty food and a great atmosphere at Lilla Huset. You’ll easily recognize this orange house between the ruins of the city!

Gotland’s nature and coast

Beyond Visby, the island is full of wild landscapes and stunning coastal views. Gotland is famous for its raukar, impressive limestone formations found along the shoreline. On Fårö, the small island just north of Gotland, you’ll find the largest collection of these formations. The Fårö lighthouse (Fårö fyr) is also an iconic spot worth visiting.

Our tip: visit Digerhuvud at sunset and explore Langhammars nature reserve. Fun fact: a rauk from Langhammars is featured on the Swedish 200-kronor banknote. Another must-see is Gamle Hamn nature reserve, home to fascinating rock formations and an old harbor ruin.

For a refreshing dip, head to Blå Lagunen, a former limestone quarry with crystal-clear blue water. It can be cold, but it's absolutely worth it! If you prefer a sandy beach, Tofta beach and Ljugarn are great spots to relax and enjoy the sun.

Gotland for food lovers

Gotland is a paradise for foodies, with a strong focus on local and sustainable ingredients. A must-visit is Katthammarsvik rökeri, where you can enjoy delicious smoked fish with a stunning seaside view. For a fine dining experience, we highly recommend Lilla Bjers, an organic farm with an outstanding restaurant.

And of course, don’t leave without trying saffranspannkaka, a traditional saffron pancake served with whipped cream and dewberry jam. Pair it with a cup of coffee or a locally brewed Gotlandic IPA for the full experience.

Unique experiences

Gotland offers plenty of unique experiences, from truffle hunting with a local guide to exploring hidden beaches and nature reserves. One of our favorite stops is Kutens Bensin on Fårö, an eccentric spot with a crêperie and bistro packed with character!

Another hidden gem is Lergrav nature reserve, where you’ll find striking raukar and breathtaking coastal views. If you’re up for a challenge, a hike to Jungfrun, Gotland’s tallest rauk, is a rewarding adventure.

Getting there

Even though there are direct flights from Stockholm, we highly recommend taking the ferry from Nynäshamn or Oskarshamn. The ferry allows you to enjoy a more scenic trip. Also handy if you plan on going by car!

Once on the island, renting a bike is our favorite way to explore Gotland. The island has excellent cycling routes, and you’ll be surprised by how many hidden gems you’ll find along the way.

Final thoughts

Gotland blends history, nature, and Scandinavian style in a way that’s hard to find elsewhere. Whether you’re strolling through Visby’s medieval streets, indulging in amazing local food, or taking in the dramatic coastlines, this island will leave a lasting impression.
